The build at a glance
♦ What we did
Travis Millwork built the casework, the glass display cubbies, the hardwood base, and the door portals throughout the space. The casework is hardwood veneer with solid hardwood frames and custom tinted glass, with slat panels worked into the design above.
We also ran the base around every room and wrapped the portals at each threshold, the sides and head you pass through walking into the lab. It is the kind of package where the pieces have to agree with each other, so we drew it, built it, and installed it as one coordinated scope rather than a set of separate parts.
♦ The Challenges
The trickier work was everything you cannot see. Drainage lines ran up from the floor below, landing right where the glass cubbies had to go, and a structural column cut straight through the ceiling. Neither could move, so the millwork had to absorb both. We built a tall toe kick that tucks the plumbing out of sight beneath the cabinets, then wrapped the column in ceiling slats so it reads as a deliberate design choice instead of an obstacle.
Stand in the finished room and you would never know any of it was there. That is the point.
